THE W.E.E. WORKSHOP SCOOP

Wo-Menopause!

What We Know Now and Why It Matters

With Emma Macfarlane

Most people go through menopause with mild to moderate symptoms.

But about 20% of people will have severe symptoms and may seek help from the medical profession.

However, many clinicians are uncertain about the safety and efficacy of menopausal treatments, in particular when prescribing menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), previously known as HRT.

There are also multiple remedies available online, but many have varied degrees of efficacy and some are associated with potentially serious side effects.

So, what is a girl to do?

Come to the workshop and find out what menopause is (and what it is not) and what the evidence says about menopausal management.

Emma is a nurse practitioner specialised in women's health (or anyone who has had a uterus at some stage in their life).

She works on the Woman's Health Bus (aka Betty) providing mobile women's health services to rural Otago and Southland.

Emma also works as a lecturer in the Section of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Dunedin School of Medicine teaching both undergraduate and post graduate doctors.

Her goal is that every medical graduate has a basic level of competency to provide women's health - after all women make up 50% of the population.

She is currently undertaking a PhD in how optimal first trimester abortion can be provided in primary care post abortion law reform in New Zealand.

Sometimes she has a life outside of these activities including raising a beautiful adolescent boy.
