Kamau Taurua
Quarantine Island

THE PLACE

Quarantine Island / Kamau Taurua is a Public Recreation Reserve and Historic Area in the heart of Otago Harbour.

The Island is ridiculously beautiful but it’s really important that you know that the accommodation is functional, not fancy.

If you sign up for the W.E.E. Treat, it’s really important that you understand and agree to the day-to-day limitations of staying in this special place.

Don’t let this put you off though. We’ll be basic bitches together.

Shit You Need to Know

It’s shared quarters for sleeping! Think boarding school dorm styles but with no need to sneak out for fun.

The tank water on the Island is UV treated and safe to drink but the Island is a great place to be mindful of resources we often take for granted. Please conserve water as all we have comes from the rain and, believe it or not, it doesn’t rain in Dunedin all that much! This conservation means we ask you not to shower if you are only staying for 1-2 days. If you have to shower, please keep it short (a minute).

The toilets are composting and can only cope with pee, poo and toilet paper. There is a separate rubbish bin for sanitary products. Always close the lid after use so warm air can circulate and help with the composting process.

We need to be mindful of waste while we are on the Island because we need to take all of our recycling and rubbish off the island when we leave. The team will take care of these details but it’s helpful to be mindful.

If you find anything broken or not working during your stay, please let me or one of the team know. If you break or damage something, you are expected to replace it or have it repaired.

Shit You Need to Bring

  • A sleeping bag and a blanket

  • A sheet to cover your DOC style mattress and a pillow

  • Ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper. Maybe let me know if you’re a chronic snorer

  • Hot water bottles, slippers or thick socks will probably enhance your experience

  • Comfy clothing for workshops and gentle exercise (yoga or walking). The weather will be warmish but pack layers. This is Dunedin after all

  • A towel and facecloth

  • Personal toiletries and sanitary products

  • Comfy indoor footwear

  • Waterproof or suitable outdoor footwear for walking

  • Togs or a wetsuit if you’re feel REALLY brave

  • A small amount of alcohol will be supplied but you’re welcome to bring your favourite tipple if that’s what your lady heart desires but in respect of this special place, moderation is expected

  • Some workshops require you to bring some small items so read the workshop briefs carefully to know what you are required to bring - eg; yoga mat and bolster if you have them

  • Anything else minimalist that makes you feel at home and happy

  • Put all your gear in a waterproof backpack or bag so it doesn’t get wet and dirty on the boat or on the jetty when you arrive and pack as simply as you can - we have to schlep gear a short distance to the lodge
